The BBC’s Life of the Buddha

Acclaimed video documentary on the traditional life of the Buddha. Quite realistically portrayed, and a very positive film, even though it presents myth as history.

I have been unable to ascertain who the authorities are who are interviewed in the film, but they sometimes give views which differ from any tradition I am aware of. In anyone can throw light on either matter please leave a comment.

  • Dear Bhante -

Thanks for posting this video. Though I’ve only time to watch 10 mins so far (4-year-old at my knee), it looks superior in some ways to the recent PBS/David Grubin “The Buddha” video.

While I’m not familiar with any of the talking heads in the film, I thought I’d pass on a possible idea. (If you’ve already thought of this, sorry for adding unnecessary bytes to this lovely site.) This video’s final credits list the “researcher” as “Elliott [sic] Cohen.” Via Google, here’s the CV of an “Elliot Cohen” that includes the title of “Researcher” for the “BBC and Discovery Channel ‘Everyman: Life of the Buddha’ … (2003).” This CV is from the site http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk . Here’s the associated staff bio: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/as/sss/1DD0BC2E1EBF4769BA128460F2139DB9.htm , which includes an e-mail address and tele. Perhaps Mr. Cohen has some additional information of value that he can share?

Hope this might be of benefit. Many blessings to you,
    Larry

Dear Larry, Thanks for noticing that. I have contacted Elliot Cohen and he responded with the following four names: Professor Peter Harvey, Professor Richard Gombrich, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Professor Robert Thurman. He also indicates “most of our contributors were from the Theravada tradition”.

I haven’t seen the David Grubin video yet, though I have tried to watch it at the PBS website it didn’t work out.
